Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Range Light listens to live guitar audio through your device's microphone (or to audio you import from a YouTube link you provide) to detect chords, infer musical key, and highlight in-key notes on a fretboard. The App is developed and owned exclusively by Transoceanic Software LLC and is distributed solely through the Apple App Store.

Range Light is designed with privacy as a foundational principle. The App does not require user accounts, does not include third-party analytics or advertising libraries, and does not transmit your audio, chord analysis, or listening activity to Transoceanic Software LLC. Audio analysis runs on your device. All data you save remains under your control at all times.

This Privacy Policy applies to all versions of Range Light available on the Apple App Store. It does not govern the data practices of Apple Inc., Google LLC (YouTube), or any other third party.

2. Information We Do Not Collect

Transoceanic Software LLC does not collect, receive, store, process, or transmit any of the following categories of information through Range Light:

• Personal identifiers — names, email addresses, telephone numbers, postal addresses, or other identifiers by which an individual may be identified.
• Location data — Range Light does not collect, store, or transmit your real-time or historical geographic location.
• Device identifiers — including IDFA, IDFV, advertising identifiers, serial numbers, or similar persistent identifiers.
• Usage analytics — session duration, screen views, feature usage, navigation patterns, or similar behavioral telemetry.
• Advertising and marketing data — the App contains no advertising infrastructure.
• Payment or financial information — purchases through the App Store, if any, are processed exclusively by Apple Inc.
• Health or biometric data — including data as defined under the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA).
• User accounts and credentials — no username, password, or authentication token is collected or managed by us.
• Communications — messages, email, call logs, or similar data on your device.
• Photos, video, or camera media — the App does not access your photo library or camera.
• Microphone recordings on our servers — live audio is processed on your device for chord detection and is not transmitted to Transoceanic Software LLC or stored on infrastructure we control.
• Chord or key analysis history on our servers — detected chords, keys, saved songs, and other content you create remain on your device or in your personal iCloud account (if enabled) and are not uploaded to Transoceanic Software LLC.

The foregoing list is representative of categories significant under applicable privacy law. The overarching principle is that we do not collect personal information from users of Range Light.

3. Information We Do Collect (Minimally)

3.1 Crash and diagnostic reports (opt-in only)

Range Light may be associated with crash reports or diagnostic data forwarded to us through Apple's standard developer crash reporting infrastructure. This occurs only if you have enabled “Share iPhone Analytics,” “Share iPad Analytics,” or equivalent diagnostics sharing in your device Settings.

We do not independently operate any mechanism to collect, solicit, or transmit diagnostic or crash data. The decision to share such data rests entirely with you and is managed through Apple's operating system and infrastructure.

Any crash or diagnostic data received through Apple's infrastructure:

• Is anonymized and does not contain your name, contact information, or personal identifiers;
• Does not contain saved songs, chord progressions, microphone audio, chord analysis results, or other user-created content;
• Is used solely to identify, diagnose, and remediate software defects and improve stability; and
• Is not shared with any third party by Transoceanic Software LLC.

You may disable diagnostics sharing at any time in Settings. See Section 11.4.

3.2 No other collection by us

Beyond the limited, opt-in, Apple-mediated crash and diagnostic reporting described above, Transoceanic Software LLC does not collect any information from users of Range Light.

4. Microphone and Live Audio

When you tap “Start Listening,” Range Light requests access to your device's microphone to analyze live guitar audio for chord and key detection. Microphone access is used only while listening is active and only for this stated purpose.

Live audio is processed in real time on your device. It is not recorded, saved to our servers, or transmitted to Transoceanic Software LLC. We do not operate backend services that receive or store microphone input.

Chord names, key candidates, and fretboard highlights displayed in the App are derived locally from that on-device analysis. You may stop microphone access at any time by tapping “Stop” in the App or by revoking microphone permission in Settings.

5. YouTube Import (Optional Feature)

If you choose to import a YouTube link, Range Light downloads the video's audio to your device for offline chord analysis. This feature is entirely optional and initiated only when you provide a URL and confirm analysis.

When you use YouTube import:

• The YouTube video identifier contained in the URL you enter is sent from your device to public third-party Piped API mirror services to retrieve stream metadata and an audio download URL.
• Audio is then downloaded directly to a temporary file on your device and analyzed locally. The temporary file is deleted when analysis completes or is cancelled.
• Transoceanic Software LLC does not receive the URL, video identifier, video title, downloaded audio, or analysis results. We do not operate the Piped API mirrors or YouTube.

Third-party services involved in YouTube import may log requests, IP addresses, or similar technical data under their own privacy policies. We encourage you to review the privacy practices of those services and of YouTube (operated by Google LLC) before using this feature.

You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to download and analyze audio from any link you submit, consistent with applicable law and the content provider's terms.

6. How Your Data Is Stored

6.1 Local on-device storage

All saved songs, chord progressions, preferences, and other content you create in Range Light are stored locally on your device using Apple's standard on-device storage mechanisms, subject to the device's built-in security controls including on-device encryption.

Live chord detection, key inference, and fretboard highlights are computed on your device. During a session, recent chord results may be held in the App's memory for display purposes.

We have no access to, and receive no copy of, any data stored locally on your device. No locally stored data is transmitted to our systems or any infrastructure we control.

6.2 iCloud synchronization (user-controlled)

If you enable iCloud for Range Light in Settings, saved app data may sync across your Apple devices via Apple's iCloud infrastructure, including CloudKit. This is entirely under your control through Apple's operating system settings.

iCloud is operated by Apple Inc. under Apple's iCloud Terms and Privacy Policy. We do not have access to, and receive no copy of, data stored in or transmitted through iCloud.

6.3 Temporary YouTube audio files

Audio downloaded for YouTube import is stored only in your device's temporary directory for the duration of analysis, then removed. Transoceanic Software LLC does not retain copies.

6.4 No server-side storage

Transoceanic Software LLC does not operate servers, databases, or backend services that store, process, or receive Range Light user data. No user data is transmitted to or processed on infrastructure we own or control, except for the limited, opt-in, Apple-mediated crash reporting described in Section 3.1.

7. How We Use Information

The only information we may receive is limited, anonymized crash and diagnostic data forwarded through Apple's developer infrastructure, and only where you have opted in at the OS level, as described in Section 3.1.

Such information, if received, is used exclusively to:

• Identify, diagnose, and remediate software defects, crashes, and errors; and
• Improve the stability, performance, and reliability of the App.

We do not use any Range Light information for:

• Marketing, advertising, or promotional communications;
• User profiling, behavioral analysis, or automated decision-making;
• Sale, licensing, or commercial exploitation of user information;
• Identification or re-identification of individual users; or
• Any purpose other than software quality and stability as described above.

8. Data Retention

8.1 User-controlled data

Because user-created data is stored on your device or in your personal iCloud account — and we receive no copy — you control retention entirely. You may delete local data by removing Range Light from your device.

Data in iCloud is subject to Apple's terms and your iCloud management. We cannot access, modify, retain, or delete user-created data stored locally or in iCloud.

8.2 Diagnostic data

Anonymized crash or diagnostic data we receive through Apple's reporting tools is retained only as long as reasonably necessary to diagnose and resolve the reported issue, then deleted. We do not maintain permanent databases of crash reports.

9. Third-Party Services

9.1 Apple Inc. and iCloud

Range Light interoperates with iCloud for users who enable synchronization. Apple functions as an independent data controller for data processed through iCloud. Review Apple's Privacy Policy at apple.com/legal/privacy before enabling iCloud for Range Light.

9.2 Apple App Store and crash reporting

Range Light is distributed through the Apple App Store. Apple's developer tools may forward crash reports to us subject to your device-level diagnostics settings, as described in Section 3.1. Apple's practices are governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.

9.3 Piped API mirrors (YouTube import only)

When you use YouTube import, the App contacts public Piped API mirror services (such as pipedapi.kavin.rocks and similar community-operated instances) from your device to resolve video metadata and audio stream URLs. Those services are operated by third parties, not Transoceanic Software LLC. We do not control their data practices, availability, or security.

9.4 YouTube and Google LLC

YouTube import retrieves audio associated with videos hosted on YouTube, a service operated by Google LLC. Google's privacy policy and terms apply to YouTube content and services: policies.google.com/privacy.

9.5 No other third-party integrations

Range Light does not integrate:

• Third-party analytics SDKs (e.g., Firebase Analytics, Mixpanel, Amplitude);
• Advertising networks or mediation platforms;
• Social media or third-party login SDKs;
• Third-party crash reporting SDKs other than Apple's native tools;
• User tracking or attribution libraries; or
• Any other library that collects or transmits user data to parties other than Apple or the third parties described above in connection with optional YouTube import.

We do not sell, license, rent, share, or otherwise transfer user information to any third party for any purpose.

10. Children's Privacy (COPPA)

Range Light is not directed at children under 13 and is not intended for use by children under 13, in compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

Because the App collects virtually no personal data from any user, the risk of inadvertent collection from children under 13 is minimal. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information through Range Light, contact us using the information in Section 15.

11. Your Privacy Rights

11.1 California residents — CCPA / CPRA

California residents have rights under the CCPA and CPRA, including rights to know, delete, correct, opt out of sale or sharing, limit use of sensitive personal information, and non-discrimination. Because Range Light does not collect personal information as defined under those laws — beyond minimally scoped, anonymized, opt-in diagnostic data — these rights are largely inapplicable in practice. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

California residents may submit requests using the contact information in Section 15. We will respond within forty-five (45) days of a verifiable request, extendable by an additional forty-five (45) days where necessary with notice.

11.2 EEA, UK, and Switzerland — GDPR / UK GDPR

Where the GDPR, UK GDPR, or Switzerland's FADP applies, the legal basis for any minimal processing of anonymized crash and diagnostic reports (where you have opted in at the OS level) is legitimate interest under Article 6(1)(f) — our interest in maintaining the quality, security, and stability of the App.

Data subjects in those jurisdictions have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection, subject to applicable limitations. Because we do not collect personal data in ordinary operation, these rights are substantially satisfied by the App's architecture. Contact us under Section 15; we will respond within thirty (30) days, extendable by sixty (60) days for complex requests with notice.

11.3 Illinois residents — BIPA

Range Light does not collect, capture, store, use, transmit, or profit from biometric identifiers or biometric information as defined under the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). Microphone audio is used solely for real-time musical analysis on your device and is not treated as biometric data by us.

11.4 All users — opt out of diagnostics sharing

You may opt out of crash and diagnostic sharing at any time in Settings. On iPhone and iPad: Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements → Share iPhone Analytics (or Share iPad Analytics).

This opt-out is immediate, controlled at the OS level, and does not require action by us. It does not affect App functionality.

12. Data Security

We implement technical safeguards appropriate to our scale, including secure development practices, code review, and timely security updates.

Because user data is not transmitted to our servers, principal security controls are Apple's, including:

• On-device data encryption (iOS Data Protection);
• iCloud security infrastructure;
• Microphone permission gating at the operating system level; and
• App Store review and code signing.

We cannot guarantee absolute security. If we identify a vulnerability that could affect user data or device integrity, we will investigate, remediate, and provide notice where required by law.

13. International Data Transfers

Range Light is developed and operated from the United States. We do not independently transfer Range Light user data internationally, as we do not receive or process Range Light user data on our own infrastructure.

Users outside the United States who enable iCloud should be aware that Apple may process data in countries other than their residence, per Apple's terms and transfer mechanisms. Such transfers are governed by Apple, not this policy.

If you use YouTube import, third-party Piped API mirrors or content delivery networks may process requests from your device in countries other than your residence, under their own terms. Such transfers are governed by those third parties, not this policy.

14. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may amend this Privacy Policy at any time to reflect changes in the App, applicable law, or our practices. Updates will be reflected by changing the “Last updated” date at the top of this document. The current version will be available on the App Store product page, within the App, and at xoceanic.com/rangelight/privacy.html.

For material changes, we will make reasonable efforts to provide notice through the App Store listing, in-app notification, or other practicable means. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance. If you do not agree, discontinue use and delete the App.

15. Contact Information

For questions, concerns, or privacy rights requests regarding this Privacy Policy or Range Light's data practices, contact Transoceanic Software LLC. We will respond within a reasonable time and no later than periods required by applicable law (including forty-five (45) days under CCPA/CPRA and thirty (30) days under GDPR, extendable by sixty (60) days for complex requests with notice).

Because Range Light does not collect account information, we may be unable to verify identity or associate a request with a specific user record. We will communicate that limitation transparently and work in good faith to respond to all inquiries.

Acknowledgment

By downloading, installing, or using Range Light, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy and agree to its terms. If you do not agree, discontinue use and delete the application from your device. We encourage you to review this policy periodically at xoceanic.com/rangelight/privacy.html for updates.
